Government Debt topped $1 trillion for the first time yesterday when the Australian Office of Financial Management issued $4 billion of Treasury notes. This underscores the deterioration in the federal budget since the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2020 pandemic and means taxpayers are now spending more on interest than they do individually on the army, unemployment benefits, childcare or public schools.
